There are four categories of Long Term Services and Supports listed below: Home and Community-Based Care, Residential Settings, Nursing Homes, and Geriatric Services.



Long Term Services for Geriatric Veterans

There are three categories of Long Term Services and Supports listed below: Home and Community-Based Care, Residential Settings, and Nursing Homes.

Home and Community-Based Care

Home and Community-Based Care supports your independence so you can remain in your own home as long as possible. You can receive more than one service at the same time. These programs may include:

  • Adult Day Health Care
  • Home Based Primary Care
  • Homemaker and Home Health Aide
  • Palliative and Hospice Care
  • Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly(PACE)
  • Respite Care
  • Skilled Home Health Care
  • Telehealth
  • Veteran Directed Care

Residential Settings

Residential Settings are supervised living situations that provide meals and assistance with activities of daily living. These settings include:

  • Adult Family Homes (not VA)
  • Assisted Living Facilities (not VA)
  • Medical Foster Homes
  • and Community Residential Care
You pay the rent for living in these settings, but if you have certified needs and are enrolled in VHA, home and community-based services can be provided to you in these settings.

Nursing Homes

Nursing Homes are settings in which skilled nursing care, along with other supportive and medical care services, is available 24 hours a day. Nursing Homes include:

  • Community Living Centers (VA Nursing Homes)
  • Community Nursing Homes
  • State Veterans Homes

Housing Assistance

Grants

VA provides grants to Servicemembers and Veterans with certain permanent and total service-connected disabilities to help purchase or construct an adapted home, or modify an existing home to accommodate a disability. Two grant programs exist:

  • Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grant
  • Special Housing Adaptation (SHA) grant

A temporary grant may be available to SAH/SHA eligible Veterans and Servicemembers who are or will be temporarily residing in a home owned by a family member

Tax Credits

Nationwide, legislation to lessen the financial strain on qualified disabled veterans stems from a six-year effort to reduce or fully eliminate property tax liability and now, more than half of the states in the U.S. offer some sort of exemption.

Mortgages

If you are a borrower and want to contact the VA Loan Guaranty Office regarding any aspect of your mortgage, please call 1-877-827-3702. Additionally, you may also contact your local Regional Loan Center for assistance and information regarding your VA loan.

Loans

VA helps Servicemembers, Veterans, and eligible surviving spouses become homeowners. VA Home Loans are provided by private lenders, such as banks and mortgage companies. VA guarantees a portion of the loan, enabling the lender to provide you with more favorable terms. Some of the loan benefit programs available are:

  • VA-guaranteed loans are available for homes for your occupancy or a spouse and/or dependent (for active duty service members). To be eligible, you must have satisfactory credit, sufficient income to meet the expected monthly obligations, and a valid Certificate of Eligibility (COE).   • Interest Rate Reduction Refinance Loan (IRRRL): also called the Streamline Refinance Loan can help you obtain a lower interest rate by refinancing your existing VA loan. Visit the IRRRL Website for more information
  • Native American Direct Loan (NADL) Program: helps eligible Native American Veterans finance the purchase, construction, or improvement of homes on Federal Trust Land, or reduce the interest rate on a VA loan. Visit the NADL website for more information
